When Code Gets Cheaper, Systems Engineering Matters More


AI is changing how quickly engineering teams can build software.


Tasks that once took days can increasingly be prototyped in hours. AI tools can help engineers write code, explore unfamiliar systems, generate tests, and evaluate possible solutions.


For complex aerospace systems, that creates an enormous opportunity.


But faster implementation does not necessarily mean better systems.


As the cost of producing software decreases, the challenge increasingly becomes making sure teams are solving the right problems, making sound engineering decisions, and keeping a complex system coherent as it evolves.


That is why we believe systems engineering becomes more important—not less—in the age of AI.


Creating context for engineering


At VTI, we have been developing a systems engineering framework that helps connect engineering work back to the larger mission and operational intent of the system.


The goal is simple: engineers should be able to understand not just what they are building, but why it exists and how it fits into the larger system.


That shared context is valuable for people. It is also increasingly valuable for AI.


AI tools are very effective when they are given a well-defined problem and the right context. Without that context, they can produce technically plausible solutions that may not align with the larger architecture or operational goals.


Our framework helps provide that context.


Instead of treating AI as an isolated coding assistant, we can use it as part of a broader engineering process—helping engineers understand changes, review solutions, identify inconsistencies, and reason about increasingly complex systems.


Moving faster without losing the system


AI will continue to increase the speed at which software can be created.


That makes engineering discipline even more important.


Complex systems still require clear intent, thoughtful architecture, careful tradeoffs, and human judgment. AI does not replace those things. It makes them more valuable by allowing teams to move faster once they are established.


At VTI, we see systems engineering and AI as complementary technologies.

Systems engineering makes sure that leverage is pointed in the right direction.
